Zen certainly ran Linux at kernel 0.95 in early 1992. ISTR that some earlier versions were tried. A huge pile of floppies and no working network code. It was run and managed by Bryce, who later worked for IBM, RedHat and Oracle. He took over a 386 based machine, which had been running Xenix, based in the Transputer Centre at Bristol Polytechnic, which later that year became the University of the West of England.

For several years zen tracked the development kernels and was at one stage the primary distribution site for the Linux JDK. Zen is the oldest continuously running Linux machine in the University.

Zen has migrated hardware and OS many times and is now running Fedora 12 on Dell R210 hardware.

Zen is currently running a Man-Eating Seals of Antiquity series kernel.
